My Toddler Doesn’t Eat, and No — We’re Not Starving Him

March 31, 2025

My two-year-old toddler is a very picky eater.

In the beginning, it really frustrated me. He wasn’t eating anything, or barely anything at all, especially when it came to fruits and veggies. He would just not have it. And if I only gave him that? Oh, the tantrums. Every. Single. Time.

It got to the point where he started losing weight.

Of course, people started talking— family, friends, random aunties with opinions.

“He’s getting skinny.”

“Are you feeding him enough?”

And just like that, the blame quietly (or not-so-quietly) landed on us— his parents. Like we weren’t trying. Like we weren’t literally offering him food 24/7.

But here’s the truth:

We’re giving him all the options. He’s just choosing not to eat.

Our pediatrician said something that really stuck with me:

“Don’t give so many different options. He’ll start expecting that every mealtime. Give him one, maybe two choices. If he doesn’t eat it, he doesn’t eat it. He’s not starving— he has access to food. He’s just choosing not to eat it.”

And that was a game-changer.

So now, when people feel the need to comment?

I either ignore it or tell them straight-up:

“You don’t live with us. You don’t see how he is every day. We’re not starving him— he’s just not eating what’s offered.”

When it comes to your child’s health and nutrition, the only person you should really be listening to is your pediatrician. Not your neighbor. Not that loud family member. Not social media.

They know your child. They’re medically trained. They see the full picture.
