Phases of Life Really Do Mean Leaving One Behind

July 23, 2025

Lately (and honestly), I’ve found myself thinking about what it really means to enter a new phase of life. It’s not just about stepping into something new. It’s also about quietly, sometimes painfully, leaving something behind. And yes, that probably sounds obvious. Of course moving forward means you’re leaving something else in the past. But it hits different when you actually feel it happening.

I’m in my late thirties now, and I hate to say it, but sometimes I feel old. Not “old” old but old if that makes any sense. I feel far removed from the girl who used to get dressed up to go to a nightclub with her friends, stay until 2 or 3 am, have drinks/shots with weird names and not even blink at the idea of staying out that late. I genuinely miss that version of me. Do I want to do that now? No. But I miss that carefree energy. The kind of freedom you have when you’re younger and life still feels open-ended. You haven’t quite figured everything out yet, but that’s exactly what makes it all so exciting.

I was listening to a podcast the other day where they mentioned TGIF (thank goodness it’s Friday). There was even a show around it. Remember when that was a whole thing? Like, a real thing. I don’t think it is anymore. At least not for people in their thirties or parents like me. But I’m sure it still is for teenagers and twenty-somethings. And I think that’s what struck me. Just because something isn’t part of my world anymore doesn’t mean it disappeared. It’s still very much alive, just in another age bracket. Which is kind of beautiful… and kind of sad.

Because here’s the truth about phases of life… when you leave one, you don’t go back. Like, ever. And maybe that’s the hardest part. I remember being in my twenties and seeing someone in their thirties at a bar or a club and thinking, “What are they doing here? Aren’t they too old for this?” And now I am that person. I’m on the other side of that lens, and wow… perspective really is something.

But here’s what I hold onto…I’m in love. I have a husband who makes me laugh and smile and feel seen. We have two beautiful little boys who keep life messy and magical. We have a cozy house that feels like home. I have a job I worked hard to earn, dreams I’m still chasing, and a life that feels like it’s constantly moving forward. I’m not stuck. I don’t feel stagnant. In fact, I feel more alive and grounded than ever.

So yeah… I might not be dancing under neon lights anymore. But I’m dancing through motherhood. I’m dancing through love. I’m dancing through the chaos and the quiet and the everything in between.

Whatever phase of life you’re in, live in it. Don’t rush it. Don’t resent it. Don’t look back and wish you had appreciated it more. Because the one thing that’s guaranteed is change. So be present. Be true to yourself. And give each chapter of your life the attention it deserves… because one day, it’ll be the one you miss.
