I Miss the Way Life Used to Feel

April 7, 2026

There was a time when the phone sat quietly in one corner of the house and only rang when someone actually wanted to talk to you. No notifications. No constant buzzing. Just that one sound. And when it rang, it meant something. You’d run to pick it up, a little excited, a little curious. Who is it? What do they want? There was this small, simple thrill in not knowing.

Now my phone is basically an extension of me. It does everything. Texting, emails, shopping, news, social media, work, photos, videos. It never really stops. And honestly, neither do we.

I miss when things felt… slower. More intentional. You didn’t text someone all day. You called them. Or you saw them. You went to a store instead of adding things to a cart at midnight. You met people in real life, at events, through friends, through random conversations. There was effort in connection, and that effort made it feel more real.

Now everything is so easy. Too easy, maybe.

We are always connected, but somehow it feels like we are less present. You can sit in a room full of people and everyone is on their phone. You can talk to someone and still feel like they are somewhere else. Even friendships feel different. You can make them online without ever really knowing the person in real life.

And then there is AI. It is everywhere now. It can write your emails, help you respond to texts, generate ideas, build campaigns, even create images of you that look real. Business headshots, portraits, content, all done without you actually doing much.

It is impressive. It is convenient. But it is also a little unsettling.

There is that saying, I think therefore I am. The idea that thinking is what makes us human. It is our ability to question, to create, to come up with something from nothing.

But if we are starting to outsource that thinking, what happens then?

If a tool writes your words, creates your ideas, even shapes how you communicate, where do you fit into that process? Are we still thinking, or are we just approving what something else has already created for us?

I catch myself doing it too. Asking for help with wording. Letting something else structure my thoughts. And while it saves time, I sometimes wonder if I am slowly using my own brain less.

Maybe that is what feels scary about all of this.

It is not just that the world has changed. It is that we are changing with it in ways we do not fully notice.

I miss the simplicity. I miss when connection required effort. I miss when boredom existed and forced you to think, to imagine, to create something on your own. I miss when a ringing phone felt exciting instead of intrusive.

Technology has made life easier in so many ways. There is no denying that. But somewhere along the way, it also made things noisier, faster, and a little less human.

And I guess the real question is not whether we can go back. We cannot.

The question is how much of that simplicity we can hold on to before it disappears completely.

An IG reel that perfectly demonstrates what I’m talking about.
